What is Functional Movement?
Functional Movement is a system of assessing and measuring body wide movement and function.
The Functional Movement system assess the areas of dysfunction, while trained professionals work with the individuals to retrain correct movement patterns. We start by conducting a Functional Movement Screening to determine your body’s specific movement limitations and restrictions. After your screening, we create a customized Functional Movement Therapy Plan that includes one-on-one therapy with a trained Functional Movement Specialist as well as personalized at-home stretches and exercises that can be completed between therapy sessions. Each participant receives a Functional Movement Journal, complete with a list of personalized goals, warm-up sequences, progressions, and space to record weekly exercises and notes as you progress through your plan.
When a Functional Movement Therapy Plan is completed, each participant receives a second Functional Movement Screening to evaluate progress and re-assess movements and function.
Why Functional Movement?
When we are born, we naturally learn how to move — from rolling to crawling to squatting — as we grow up. These movements are vital for the health and function of all joints and muscle balance in the body. The problem arises when people get older and learn new, poor muscle motor patterns that put awkward stresses on joints and create muscle imbalance leading to pain and dysfunction. Just like when the tires on your car start to wear out on one side if they are misaligned, the joints in your body can start to wear out if they aren’t moving the way they were designed to move.
